| In some other dive a thousand miles away I played a thousand times before And like pathetic stars, the truck stops and the rock club walls the 'truck stops' are the diners that cater for the huge trucks to be able to park while the truck drivers eat. He is driving from one gig to another - driving to some other dive a thousand miles from his last gig - and also stops at these diners on the way. The 'rock club' is the type of venue where he performs, and as in the first verse about 'dirty words on dirty walls', he is merely referring to the walls of a rock club. 'truck stops' : 'stops' here is not the verb 'to stop'. It is the same as 'waiting at the bus stop for a bus', the noun. A 'stop' is a place designated for a bus or train to halt and pick up or drop off. With 'truck stop', as I said above, it is a diner that caters for a dozen or so trucks to stop and park while the driver eats. It's not easy doing that with a dozen trucks and a McDonald's drive-through! Last edited by David L.; 05-Mar-2009 at 19:44. |

| A good case for hyphenation, to give truck-stops. Fruit flies like bananas = Fruit (flies like bananas) | (Fruit flies) like bananas? |

| Can you give us more of the words? Or the name of the song? This isn't enough to go on. |

"Truck stops" isn't usually hyphenated in AmE; it's commonly understood to mean a diner along the highway that serves large portions of good food quickly and inexpensively, which appeals to truck drivers. They usually also have parking lots large enough to accommodate the "big rigs." This song is about singer/musician Elliott Smith, who sadly committed suicide in 2003. Since they were both musicians, they saw the same rock clubs and restaurants and hotels while on the road, which can get tedious, which is what Ben is singing about in "Late." |

| For Charlie B: Under some dirty words on a dirty wall Eating takeout by myself I played the shows Got back in the van and put the Walkman on And you were playing In some other dive a thousand miles away I played a thousand times before And like pathetic stars, the truck stops and the rock club walls I always knew You saw them too But you never will again It's too late Don't you know It's been too late For a long time Elliott, man, you played a fine guitar And some dirty basketball The songs you wrote Got me through a lot Just wanna tell you that But it's too late It's too late No, don't you know it's been too late for a long time Oh no Things were looking up Least that's what I heard Oh no Someone came and washed away your hard-earned Peace of mind When desperate static beats the silence up A quiet truth to calm you down The songs you wrote Got me through a lot Just wanna tell you that But it's too late It's too late No, don't you know It's been too late For a long time It's too late It's too late No, don't you know It's been too late For a long time |
