I've analysed the following sentence but I'm not sure about my result. It would be very helpful to get a hint
She worked very hard so that she could be promoted.
She worked very hard =main clause/ She/S=nphr./worked/P=vphr/very hard=advphr preceded by an adverb
so that she could be promoted=subordinated clause adv.phr. or clause S+P?? of purpose
I need help, help...Chrisi

A: so that she could be promoted. (Adverbial phrase)
The reason (she worked very hard) was so that she could be promoted.
Note, be promoted is passive.![]()
Dear teacher,
What do you think of my analyses ?
1) She worked very hard.
she = subject
worked = intransitive verb
very hard = adverbial of manner ? (2 adverbs ?)
2) She found the bed very hard.
she = subject (NP)
found = transitive verb (VP)
the bed = direct object (NP)
very hard = subject-complement (adj. P ? = adverb + adjective ?)
3) She bought herself five pounds of chocolate for her birthday.
parts of speech:
she = subject personal pronoun
bought = ditransitive verb
herself = reflexive pronoun
five = determinative adjective / cardinal number ?
pounds = noun
of = preposition
chocolate = noun
for = preposition
her = possessive adjective
birthday = noun
sentence pattern:
She = subject
Bought = verb
Herself = indirect object
Five pounds of chocolate = direct object
For her birthday = adverbial of time / adverbial of purpose ?
Many thanks for you correction.
All the best,
Hela

Hello everyone,
Could someone pleaaaase correct my analysis above ? I would be very grateful.
Regards,
Hela
very hard = subject-complement (adj. P ? = adverb + adjective ?)
How's this a subject complement?
five = determinative adjective / cardinal number ?
I'd call this a determiner
For her birthday = adverbial of time / adverbial of purpose ?
I'd say this was the reason for the purchase, more than the time.![]()
I agree with tdol.![]()
1) She worked very hard.
(Adverb of Manner; Cf. She worked like a dog; How?)
2) She found the bed very hard.
(Object Complement; the bed is very hard)
3) She bought herself five pounds of chocolate for her birthday.
(Adverb of Purpose; Why did she buy herself chocolates?)
Thanks to you, tdol and Casiopea! That's very kind of you.
What do you think of :
She is very proud of her looks.
She = subject
is = copula
very proud = subject complement
of her looks = adverbial (?) [of what?] / object of the preposition "of" ?
Thanks a million,
Hela
You're welcome.Try,
She is very proud.
S+V+Adv+Adj (Predicate Adjective modified by the adverb "very")
She is very proud of her looks.
S+V+Adv+Adj+Prep+Adj+Noun (Noun phrase;object of preposition "of")
Thanks Casiopea,
I'm sure I'll come back to you for more analyses, if you wouldn't mind.
All the best,
Hela
