Default difficult of attainment = difficult achieved

Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence from the Hawthorne’s “House of the Seven Gables “?

"The narrative, it may be, is woven of so humble a texture as to require this advantage, and, at the same time, to render it the more difficult of attainment."

difficult of attainment = difficult achieved

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.
