I am wondering what I should say:
1 In the school,students need to wear the same pants and a shirt.
2 In the school,students need to wear the same pants and shirts.
3 In the school,students need to wear the same pants and the shirt.
4 In the school,students need to wear the same pants and the shirts.
What stuck me is that each student individually wears a shirt.So should I say 1 , 2 3or 4?
I wonder how native speakers say it.

The same colour do you mean? or the same model? Because it is impossible for them (students) wear the same pant or shirt.

At school, students are required to wear regulation school shorts and shirt.

The above means they wear a particular style and colour of shorts from the same manufacturer, and the same with the shirt.

If there is a definite school uniform, say, grey shirt with maroon trimming, then:
At school, students are required to wear regulation school uniform.

One more question,
The question is from a test exercise book which is not original.Also the answer is:
Students need to wear the same pants and shirts.
I think that the answer is not right after reading all of your input because just like what nuharani's reason in#2.
But I am not so sure.Could you confirm it for me?

What they are trying to say is that all the boys wear the same kind of shorts, and wear the same kind of shirt.
A native speaker would understand what is meant by Students need to wear the same pants and shirts., but smile at it, because of its possible other meaning!

So, no, your original from that book is not the best way to express it!

'matching' means that my shirt matches my pants. It does not mean that all the boys are wearing identical clothes!

We say 1 without the a or we say 2.

3 and 4 are wrong.

And we say matching. Here's how we'd use the same:

- He had on the same shirt yesterday that he's wearing today.
- She always wears the same pants.
- I'm tired of always wearing the same pants and shirt.
