| "Turbulent markets took a further toll on financial jobs yesterday as Citigroup, the US banking giant, announced the closure of two UK sub-prime businesses, and Ingenious, the media investment company, shut its fledgling stockbroking arm." I found the following news on a different UK site. "WASHING machine makers Indesit have announced they are closing their Bodelwyddan factory with more than 300 jobs facing the axe. Closure of the factory was the ‘only feasible option’ for the company, which was originally Hotpoint in Llandudno Junction." The use of "the closure of" and "closure of" again confused me. Is the use of the definite article before "of-phrase" optional? |

| 1. One specific thing was announced: the closure. 2. Closure of the factory was the ‘only feasible option’ for the company, This could have been "Closing the factory" or "The closure of the factory" or "Opening the factory" Too many "the's" would have made it confusing. "of" has nothing to do with the use of the "the" with closure. |
