Default Possessive adj + gerund

Hello,

Can someone clarify the following please? Is it correct to say 'Do you mind my asking?' or 'Do you mind me asking?'. What is the general rule for the this? When does the Gerund need to be preceded by a possessive adj?

Many thanks

The use of a possessive form is preferable in formal writing.
