"I" is used, when you do something (active)
"me" is used, when somthing happens to you (passive)

1.) I gave her the book.
2.) She gave me a book.

1.) Can I help you?
2.) Would you please help me?

1.) I am walking with my friends to school.
2.) My friends are walking with me to school.

In addition , here's a trick that may help. In general, "I" comes before the verb, and "me" comes after the verb, like this,

1a) It happened when I was walking to school.
=> "I" comes before the verb was walking.

1b) It happened to me.
=> "me" comes after the verb happened.

By the way, it's considered polite to place the other person before you, e.g., my friend and I, my friend and me, like this,

2a) It happened when my friend and I were walking to school.
2b) It happened to my friend and me.
