I'd like to ask what "give rise to" means in the following context:

Many of us have witnessed incredible events of spiritual healing
occurring around persons like Ron Roth, John of God, Sri Bhagavan,
and numerous others. While the evidence is hard to deny in and of
itself, our inability to fathom a mechanism for such healings to occur
often tends to lead us into disbelief even in the face of the best evidence.
The study of the orbs gives rise to a “mechanism” for spiritual
healing, still simplistic, yet quite feasible.

Does "gives rise to" mean "give us a possibility to understand" a mechanism?

'gives rise to' means "to cause something to exist"

I think that the reason for inappropriate use of idioms can be related to the fact that although the book was published in the US (and edited by an american) it was written (at least the second part) by a native speaker of German.
