Default Emphasizing a word in an essay?

I'm helping one of my students with essay writing and exam preparation. He wants to know how to stress a word in writing. I know that if one is using a computer, one could italicize it, but how does one emphasize a word in writing? In searching for the answer, I've read that one should underline such a word but I'm wondering if there are other ways to show emphasis...somehow, underlining the word doesn't seem quite right to me. I tend to want to put quotation marks around it!

Please help! All and any input much appreciated!

If you mean in handwriting - underlining; placing in quotation marks; writing in block capitals.
