    A little more context might help. However - mashed potatoes without gravy will be bland and flavourless.

    I know where you got this... it's a quote from Billy Bob Thornton about Canadian audiences being less than expressive.... Here, he means the minimum is there, but nothing special, nothing extra, nothing more than the minimum of applause etc.

    unfortunate sentence, isn't it?
    if one is polite enough not to throw chairs into the air, then they are inexpressive?
    maybe his music isn't that good, right?

    I agree. We can be Spartan, but can also get very rowdy and expressive. It's sour grapes.
