Does "give" mean "happen," as in, "What gives?"
Alternatively, does ithe phrase mean, "Something has to be compromised?"

Here, "give" means yield, or give way, or open up, not exactly as in happen.
It is a prediction, and means "something is unstable in this situation and is likely to change."
