Hi Teachers,
I´m learning about GERUNDS with a list of the most commmon verbs followed by gerunds. I learned the list and I tried to resolve a quiz from this site to test my knowledge. I found some questions about GERUNDS
I mustn't forget ...... her tomorrow. (phoning / to phone)
What would you like ....... this evening? (doing / to do)
I had both sentences wrong because I chose phoning and doing respectively. I know those verbs might be followed by gerund or infinitive.
Why did I have this sentences wrong?
He stopped ____ a coffee and a rest before he went back to work.
the correct answer is "to have" according the quiz from this site... WHY! if "stop" is a verb followed by gerund and not by infinitive.....ahhhhhhh!!!!

He stopped having his coffee here after the coffee shop on the next block went topless.
He stopped to have a coffee then went back to painting the ceiling.
Can you see the difference in meaning when I use 'having' and 'to have'?
Using 'stop':
"He stops to buy his newspaper here every morning."
"We're pelting along the road, trying to make it to the airport on time, when he stops to phone his mother!"
"Stop phoning me at work! I'm not supposed to have private calls."
"He stopped phoning me after a couple of dates. I think I was just too much woman for that little man to handle."
