Hi teachers,

Can u tell me what it really means when people say "read my lips"?

I believe it means sth other than its literal meaning.

It means, roughly, 'you don't seem to be understanding my point--listen to my words carefully and believe what I say'.

reading lips means understanding what somebody is saying by watching the way their lips move. "lip-reading"

the phrase 'read my lips' is now so tied to Bush Sr's (in)famous 'read my lips, no new taxes' line that it is hard to use it any other context now
