If I translate say from English into German, can I say:


1. I am a translator in English-German.
2. I am an English-German translator.


Both seem awkward to me. Any better suggestions?

The second one sounds much better to me; not really awkward at all. Just out of curiosity, I did some poking around the web and it seems to me as though I am an English-German translator is the way to go, just as I suspected. I found phrases of this structure used on several sites dealing with translation services. In fact, in many cases, perhaps because the sites were in English and so English was assumed to be the base language, phrases like German translator were also commonly used. However, in a more general context it may be that English-German translator would be a "safer" choice in the sense that it's 100 percent clear and you're not taking anything for granted.

The first one really does seem awkward; in fact, I would consider it incorrect.
