Default Prounciation rules for ¨ed¨.

Is there ANY rule to explain why in certain words ¨ed¨ is pronounced as a ¨t¨ (most of the time) - eg; ¨placed¨, but in certain cases the ¨ed¨is pronounced as ¨ed¨ - ¨anticipated¨ ? - Thanks in advance
