Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
I'll tell you about this guy. He owes me some money. I was going home from work yesterday. He was coming in my direction. I am sure he saw me but he acted like he didn't and just went past me. He had done this a couple of times before.
Can someone please correct the above paragraph? Please suggest some alternatives for coming in my direction. Would coming towards me/coming from opposite side fit in this context?
Re: Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
"coming towards me" is better.
The term for his action is "cutting me dead" = he ignored me even though he knew I was there.
Re: Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
Thanks a lot, Anglika!
But doesn't coming towards me mean he is walking up to me? What does coming from opposite side mean?
Re: Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
I return the question. What do you mean by "the opposite side"? If you mean on the other side of the road, he must still be facing towards you in order to cut you.
Re: Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
Say, I am headed east and he is headed west. In that case, isn't he coming from the opposite side? Does opposite direction sound better?
Re: Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
Yes, but why complicate the issue with compass directions? "Coming towards me" says all you need to know.
Re: Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
The reason is, I feel, coming towards me means that he saw me and started walking up to me (say, to talk to me or something). But in the context I provided, he was not walking up to me. He was walking in my general direction.
Is my understanding of coming towards me wrong? I am sorry if I am asking you the same thing again.
Re: Coming towards me vs coming from opposite side
I think you may be trying to read too much into it. It just means that you and he are walking in opposite directions, facing one another, so you are moving towards each other.
