What's the exact plural form of the word fish?

Usually it's fish. I caught three fish yesterday. In fact, fish is always acceptable. However, sometimes, to emphasize the different species, one might say, "There are fishes in the sea and birds in the sky" - but frankly, it sounds a bit archaic, or at best, academic.
