"going to" or "will"

I know they both pertain to the future. But is there any difference between them. Which one do you use?

In general, going to expresses what one plans or intends to do, whereas will expresses what one is determined to do.

EX: I am going to call you. (I plan on doing it; I intend to do it)
EX: I will call you. (I am determined to do it)
