What do these mean?

1. We are family
2. We are a family
3. We are families?

1. We are related. ('family' functions as an adjective)
2. We are a group related by bond: blood, marriage or adoption.
3. We are more than one group related by bond.

In 2. and 3., 'family' and 'families' function as nouns.
