- For Teachers
I do not know the meaning of "I missed by only two generations being turned into a cake of soap". Explain it , please. Thanks!
Dear Teacher Barb_D ,
Its context is :
They had touched this reader's heart all the more because my grandmother's childhood home, Kalisch, was just over a hundred miles from Warsaw, where Jews from many such nearby towns were rounded up before being sent to the gas ovens. I missed by only two generations being turned into a cake of soap.

The context is quite clear. The Jews from the region in which his grandparents lived largely ended in the gas ovens - he is two generations from that and thus escaped what happened to their bodies - being rendered down and turned into soap.
Many Holocaust scholars today say that the stories of making soap from human fat were Nazi propaganda used to intimidate prisoners at that time. There were many thousands of atrocities that occurred in the concentration camps, but apparently using humans to manufacture soap was not one of them.
Thank Teachers for your good guidance very much.
