    Default many are there

    Dear teachers.

I'd like to know the meaning of "many" and "there" in the next sentence.

"This is because many are there because of abuse and neglect."

They are in their 70's and for years have fostered babies that have physical and emotional problems. Over the years they fostered over 100 babies. They have even adopted a teenager who no one wanted.
They don't have much, but they have love and for the short time the babies are with them, the babies are showered with love. Usually, the babies don't know about love until they come to live with the couple. This is because many are there because of abuse and neglect. The couple also are involved as much as they can in finding a permanent home for the babies.
These babies won't remember what the time with the older couple, but the time there will give the babies the opportunity to learn how to love and to bond.

This is because many [of the babies] are there [at the couple's house] because they have been abused or neglected.

    Hello,

    many refers to the babies.
there refers to the place where they live.

The sentence mean, that the babies don't feel alone with their problems, because at this place are many other babies who has the same destiny.

    Hope that helps.

    Kind regards,
    Dany
