1. I’m particularly mulling over the challenge, the problem, the dilemma - of how to increase yearly income by a factor of at least 5.

mull (v) = reflect deeply on a subject as in: “"I mulled over the events of the afternoon"
mulling over = pondering

2. The bankruptcy is a moment of reckoning for an industry that was once at the heart of the American economy.

reckoning= a settlement of accounts

3. The move by a New York affiliate will enable G.M. itself to file its own bankruptcy petition in New York.

file (v) = register (v)

4. “We have a work-based safety net without work,” said Timothy M. Smeeding, an economist at the University of Wisconsin. “We’re really in a pickle.”

in a pickle = in a difficult or embarrassing situation, in a dilemma.
