Why are you claiming that there is an error simply because the two verbs were written in different tenses?

I took a grammar exam where I was expected to identify a "verb-tense agreement" mistake in a sentence. The sentence structure presented in the exam was exactly as the one I provided in the example.
The professor said that the mistake found in the sentence was a "verb-tense agreement". Therefore, I loss the points for that question.
Being a professor, I thought he was right, but after your and everybody else's reply to my question, I realized that my answer was correct.
