Who does each of the adverbials refer to?
The following sentences are taken from Collins and I don't know how to interprete these sentences:
They watched the visitor depart as quietly as he had come.
(Did they watch him quietly or did the visitor depart quietly?)
He had learned of his father's death in Australia.
(Had he learned of the news in Australia or did his father die in Australia?)
He had read of her elopement while at Oxford.
(Had he read of her elopement while he was at Oxford or did she elope while she was at Oxford?)
Could I ask native speakers to help me with these questions please? Thank you in advance.

Reason: a misspelt word.
