In my opinion it’s all too obvious.

take down = take apart, dismantle, take to pieces, as in They took down the scaffolding.

The opposite of the term in question is : assemble, fit, mount, install, situate, place, as your set up.

take off = to remove, as from the surface or outside; to remove from the top of anything; as, to take off a load; to take off one's hat.

take off = carry or take away,

as in “The passengers were taken off one by one.”

By parity of reasoning “The curtains were taken off one by one.”
