Just confused about parts of speech

Do all the words in english just state a thing? IS everything a thing? Sometime is seems like that depending on how they are explained.

But then I think that this must be wrong, how would sentences even work. Some words have nothing to do with things, but help to make sentences flow, like conjunctions(and, but etc). Others are explaining what is happening like verbs(run, jump etc). Is this correct, not all words are just telling us a thing, but rather completely different stuff.

It sounds like you actually have a pretty good grasp on this. I added a link to the bottom of this post that gives a list of the different parts of a sentence. Maybe the way someone explains parts of the sentence make it sound like every part is describing a thing, but really, only nouns describe an actual thing.

So not all words state things basically? That is why there are other part of speech right.

How could you define the word 'and" as a thing, it would make no sense right?

So don't get caught up on the fact sometimes we explain things in different ways, sometime we don't literally mean it as a thing?

bhaisahab, so you are saying right, not every word can be a thing. Just one example are adjectives. They cannot be nor state a thing, rather they help inform and describe (enoromus elaphant). Enormus is not a thing, I cannot have an enoromus, makes no sense, but yet the words is stating description and helping give a picture of the animal.
