    Default Past Perfect

    Hello,

I don't understand, why I have to use "past perfect" in the following sentence .

After we had done our job we were happy.

I have learned, that when something happened in a succession I have to use "simple past". We first did our job and then we were happy. It is in a succession.
It would be right to use "past perfect" when I say "We were happy after we had done our job".

Have I misunderstood something or is there a mistake in the solution?

    Kind regards,
    Dany

    Thumbs up Re: Past Perfect

    Hi Dany
Using the past perfect after time conjunctions [after / as soon as / until ...etc] to descibe the first of two successive actions is obtional. You can use either the past simple or the past perfect to describe the first action. Use the past perfect only for more emphasis

The sequence of words doesn't necessarily reflect the sequence of actions, so both of the sentences are correct.
