Default fall off vs fall down from

Can someone please tell me the difference between fall off and fall down from? Which of the following two sentences sounds natural? Is there any difference between them?

1) I fell down from the building.
2) I fell off the building.

I'd use 'off' if I fell from the roof and 'down from' if I were climbing the wall.

I fell off the building sounds natural. I fell off the ladder. I fell down the stairs. This is a tricky one.
