| I think # 4 is a red herring in this excercise. I think the word should be unsuccessful. Successive indicates something happening in quick succession, as in shots being fired from a gun. The fact that the sentence says that he finally passed the driver's test, indicates to me that there was a lengthy time period between the tries. |

The slight difference in the two words is that continuously means without interruption, as when a slide show goes on and on, while continually might have a short interruption, correct????? |
