[Vocabulary] a difficult choice

I would like to receive a suggestion about the minor changes I put into brackets in the following statement:

"On the other hand (However?), Mr. Smith was delighted to be informed ... On the contrary (Conversely?), Mr. Brown was very upset...."

The question I set concerns a matter of style, I think, and it regards a written, formal, text.
