Is a "copular" verb the same as a "linking" verb?

Hi! I think that "lay" is an action verb and "lie" isn't.

Then in your example "The pieces lay scattered over the floor", the verb is not "lay" but "lie". Remember that "lay" is a transitive verb.

And yes, copular and linking are the same thing.

Cheers! Maeve.

Maeve, What do you have for your list of linking verbs?
If I may be so bold to ask.

Here is a list of linking verbs. The verbs in green are called resulting copulas:

appear, be, feel, look, remain, seem, sit, smell, sound, stay, taste, become, get, go, grow, prove, turn

Note, linking verbs have other functions:

The milk turned sour. (linking)
The driver turned the corner. (non-linking)

She looks good these days. (linking)
She looks at me all the time. (non-linking)
