    Default has or had

Are there any grammatical mistakes in the following two sentences?

I saw her at work as the principal of Parkview School many years ago and noticed how affectionate she was to her students. I wondered then what a difference it would have (or had?) made if my Headmaster were like her when I was in elementary school.
