I wonder if there is any difference between (1) and (2).
1. What if we are wrong?
2. What if we were wrong?

(1) refers to the present possibility of being wrong.
(2) refers to either the present impossibility of being wrong, or the past possibility of being wrong.
Try:
'What if he is wrong?'
'What if he was wrong?'
'What if he were wrong?'
