Tips on how I could improve my work.

A link to the poem: (EDIT: Sorry, I cannot post links as I do not have 5 posts, yet.) Just google "A.H Audens The Unknown Citizen".

Also, it's a Grade 12 assignment

Background Information on Assignment: We were given a list of poems to pick from to create device charts which helped develop the general theme of the poem. We then had to write an essay using somewhat of a general deductive format seperating each major device quotation (in mine, I beleive they were allusions as they alluded to other things in life and even non-existent things) into seperate paragraphs. Thus, ending with a Thesis/Introduction, 3 Sub-Paragraphs, and a Conclusion.

------------------------------

As the world progresses so does the technology that surrounds us. With the ever-advancing technological discoveries, inventions, and innovations it seems as if the humanity of the world is depleting. Humans struggle for a personal identity, however; with technology in the world today, it puts them back at square one. Humans are in a society today where they’re labelled, given a number, and are being displayed more and more as ‘faceless citizens’. Thus, the phrase “The Unknown Citizen” forms. The character being portrayed in the poem titled, “The Unknown Citizen” by W.H Auden seems to be living the average, active life. He’s had his jobs where he has dedicated the majority of his time to, he has been deployed to war, and he’s married and has five kids. However, the poem is a narrative through the eyes of a bureaucrat in a government office looking into his life. This bureaucrat that sits in an office all day reading and analyzing documents can see the materialism in ones life but not the actual meaning, emotions, or feelings conveyed throughout his life. Throughout the narrative, from start to finish, there are countless allusions used to refer to make-believe statistics and government procedures. Some of these include, the sub-title “To JS/07/M/378/ This Marble Monument Is Erected by the State”, where Auden states the quotation “He was found by the Bureau of Statistics”, and another instance where Auden refers to the quotation, “But satisfied his employers, Fudge Motors Inc.” All of these quotations from A.H Auden show exemplary progress towards the general theme of: As technology generally becomes more efficient and useful, humans are becoming less of an identity and more of a number or a statistic. We are living in a world where every human being fights for their own individualism, however; the abundance of technology advancements contradict what humans are fighting for and results in people striving to be normal and to stray away from being distinguished as different.

First, the sub-title “To JS/07/M/378/ This Marble Monument Is Erected by the State” (Sub-Title) alludes to the concept of a make-believe concept enforced by the government that every human being must be classified by a alpha-numeric tag to distinguish who they are. Rather than being able to have their own personal identity. Throughout the poem, the individual being described is referred to as “JS/07/M/378”. The random letters and numbers followed by forward slashes are all justified by the government. Each section of letters and numbers is supposed to represent something. For example, the “JS” may refer to the first letter of his first name and the first letter of his last name; where “M” maybe specifies whether he or she is male or female. This quotation found in the sub-title is an ample example of the theme of the poem. Humans are being given alpha-numeric names to be distinguished by; meanwhile, they’re struggling for their own personal identity in a world clustered with the advancing technology.

Second, the quotation “found by the Bureau of Statistics” (1) allows the abstract concept of numbers and letters being the reference to a human being instead of their actual name to be more of a concrete concept. This quotation is symbolizing that a make-believe sector of the government (The Bureau of Statistics) are actually finding people and categorizing them by numbers, statistics, and facts. Where A.H Auden says, “He was married and added five children to the population” (25) and “Which our Eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation” (26) is merely just a statistic and fact that the government is recording. It is almost as if the only thing that matters is the monetary value to which everything one does. The initial quote and the two supporting quotes greatly contribute to the general theme of the poem by alluding to a make-believe “Bureau of Statistics” where the only thing that matters are the amounts and values you contribute back to society in place of the actual things that matter.

Lastly, where W.H Auden says, “But satisfied his employers, Fudge Motors Inc” (8) is quite ironic. The fact that he picked an automotive factory as his job (in my opinion) alludes to the concept of the assembly line used in automotive plants. The assembly line could very well relate to the process and journey of ones life. The concept of the assembly of a car is: only one part can be worked on at a time per station. (i.e. Tires) This concept relates quite well back to life in the theory of that generally you tackle one issue at a time, doing more than that will often lead to stress, over-working, and unwanted issues. This, in turn, also happens in the automotive assembly line. As per how this contributes to the general theme. The meaning behind the assembly line and its correlation to life is that the “Unknown Citizen” being analyzed in this poem is in fact just following the very typical, normal, and average life style instead of being different and striving for individualism.

In conclusion, the world today is constantly progressing to be more technology efficient but on the other side of the spectrum, humans are striving to have their own personal identities and to be different from one another. Meanwhile the technology is putting all humans back at square one. At the end of the poem, W.H Auden leaves a question. He says, “Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd: Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard.” This statement shows that even though the government knows every statistic and fact going on in ones life, they don’t know the actual feelings or meaning to ones life.

Do you agree or disagree: Playing sports teaches people more lessons about the life.

In contemporary society, playing sports is increasingly prevalent and fundamentally changed our lives. But meanwhile, there is no unanimous consensus on whether sports can teach us lessons about our lives or not. Those who favor playing sports believe that sports are important and truly give us a better appreciation of lives. On the other hand, others insist it is not that worthy for us to play sports. For my part, the former one sounds more reasonable.

First of all, it is generally accepted that playing sports all year around is not easy for people. Therefore, those who can stick to it must be individuals with strong mind. For example, in the gymnasium I always head for, I realized the majority of members there are often exercising a lot during the first month the credit, then less and less people would regularly be there to play sports. In other words, every person who can always play sports surely learned how to stand for what they are willing to do. That is an essential element of life for sure.

Besides, an equally key reason to explain why I advocate sports teach us about lives is we can realize how to stand up after we fail. I would like to cite a single example of my friend Alice who was endeavoring to play Ping Pong. Alice is definitely not an expert in sports so she could not even catch the ball within the first week she began to play it. Alice told me it is terrible to experience all the failure. However, she realized she had to recover from the bad mood and she told herself, "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game." At last, she conquered herself and soon she became a famous player in our school.

Additionally, playing sports teaches us how to arrange our time properly. Common sense lead us to know every one need a long time to play sports since we must change to our sportswears, walk or drive to playgrounds or gymnasium and take a shower after sports. We should probably design our schedules and carefully work on them. After some days to adapt to the timetable, we become time conscious people then we succeeded.

Undeniably, what sports can teach us is really limited, we should learn more about lives in other ways too. Nevertheless, playing sports is absolutely benefiting us all. It helps us ease our mind, release pressure and more importantly, gives us lessons about lives which should be valued permanently.

Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Technology has made the world a better place to live. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Although many people blame technology for destroying nature and causing pollution, and say that it is the worst evil in the world , I still believe that it has greatly changed our lives for the better as we hardly imagine what would happen if we went for a day without technology.

Technology is very popular in our daily life thanks to its advantages. As we know, firstly, technology in household helps people do the housework. For example, housewives do not need to wash manually, but they can use washing machine.

Another reason why I advocate the viewpoint that technology has made the world a better place to live is that it makes the world smaller. Nowadays people can travel faster and easier to other places by car, bus and air-plane, and see many new interesting things around the world. In addition, they communicate with people in different countries through the Internet and phones, which saves them lots of time and money.

But the most worthwhile benefit technology has brought to us is that it makes us healthier and happier. Clear progress in medicine, use new technologies to diagnose and combat diseases make therapy more effective. It allows us to cure serious diseases such as cancer and cardiopathy. Statistics show that life expectancy is getting longer. In Europe, for example, today life expectancy has climbed past 80 and people are glad to be alive; the longer they live in good health, the happier they feel they are.

So, as we go forward into this ‘magical future’, will technology make the world a better place to live? Experts say it will!

For more than 20 years, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank has been serving the Baton Rouge area along with ten other parishes in Louisiana. The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is a non-profit organization which distributes food to a variety of community agencies which serve the people in need. Last year alone, over 10 million pounds of food was distributed throughout our community. The Greater Baton Rouge Food bank also host special events to raise money and food for our community, such as Feed a Family, Slice of Life Golf Classic, and Art for food, just to name a few. For every dollar raised, the food bank can provide ten meals to the needy.
I recently volunteered at the Greater Baton Rouge Food bank. I am currently taking a theology course which requires the students to participate in community service hours. I chose to volunteer my time to the food bank because they are a local organization feeding the needy in our community and I feel that this is extremely important especially with the state of our economy today. Ending hunger, not only in our community, but in America is imperative. The thought of a child without a meal is truly heartbreaking. Just a small amount of help can make such a huge difference. I’m sure you have seen the Feed a Family barrels at your local grocery store. Each full barrel of food feeds a family of four for two weeks. It doesn’t take much time or money to grab a few extra canned goods or non-perishable food items to drop in the barrel on your way out. That is only one of the many ways of helping out in our community.
Shortly after I arrived at the food bank, I began to empty barrels of food, sorting through them, boxing and packing them along with the help of 2 of my classmates. Sure it sounds simple, but it was physically demanding. After an hour of doing this, my back was in pain from the bending and lifting. The thought of leaving the food bank was very tempting. After I thought about what I was doing and the good that would come out of it, the temptation left my thoughts. Another challenge during my experience was that I was working hard in a warehouse. I was doing behind the scenes work and I wasn’t able to see the end result of the hard work I was contributing in. I would have liked to actually see families receive food in times of need. The thought of the joy and happiness these families would experience, changed my perception during the time that I was at the food bank. I then could only think about how satisfying it really is to help the people in our community during rough times, even though I’m only sorting and boxing food in a warehouse.
When I left the food bank, I felt a very wonderful, satisfying emotion over myself. It’s a rewarding feeling knowing you have done something good to help someone when they need it. I believe that feeling made this experience a success for me along with the information that I have learned from the course. My generosity and compassion to help others helped me get through the challenges of this experience. I know that God was working through me, sending out the message of love and to feed the hungry.
I have gained a great deal of knowledge from this experience in conjunction with the course I am currently taking. Before I contributed my time at the food bank, I did not know much about it except for the fact that they give food to less fortunate people. I learned that there is more work involved than just handing food out to people. Sorting, boxing, packing, and distributing food from a warehouse to agencies is not as easy as it seems. The information I have learned in my theology class has helped me to connect the material and the service learning. A particular topic discussed was regarding the Kingdom of God, which God reached out to those who were poor and oppressed feeling unloved and helpless by a community of love. I felt that God was working through my classmates and I to reach out to our community, to give love and hope to those who are in need. This also ties in the Christian code of morality which preaches to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty.
In my theology class, we discussed Lawrence Kohlberg’s levels of morality. These levels are reasons why we do the right thing. There are 6 levels beginning with the lowest level to avoid punishment and ending with the highest level of love. Before I completed my community service hours I was doing this for a reward, which is the second level. The reward I wanted was a good grade in my class. After completing this project and leaving the food bank feeling like I made such a wonderful difference in my community, I realized that initially I may have done this for a reward but I did it for love and compassion. Even though the beginning of my service learning experience was rocky, what I have learned from my theology course definitely helped me get through this to see the difference I was making.
This experience has helped me to open my eyes to how much hunger has become a problem everywhere. It makes me realize how truly appreciative and grateful of my life and the things that I have. It has made me open up to see how God has blessed me in my life.

This is the paragraph tell about good points of computer in barking. And I hope you will correct it

Today, computer has been helping human in banking exchange so much. Many years ago, when the computer was not still invented, you wanted withdraw money your account, you had to go to the bank absolutely. Let you imagine, if you lived in a rural area where wasn't have bank, what would you do to withdraw money? You had to move a long distance to city far way to see a bank and clearly, in this case, that is too inconvenient and difficult for you. But now that is not exist longer. You can withdraw your money anywhere that you want and don't need to go to the bank by your credit card. Other hand, you don't also need to keep a lot of cash beside yourself. You just keep your credit card. If someone stole your credit card, he can't also have your money because it was protected by a password that only you can open it. It's so safe, isn't it? This is a good point of computer in banking. And there are many many other features that we are still unknown that computer can do in banking.

Im taking a religion class, which we had to complete community service and write a 5 page paper on it. Im in college and haven't taken an english class in years, and I always struggled in english.
I have a list of 10 questions to answer in the essay, but it seems kind of hard to do. My community service was at the food bank, I sorted and boxed food. I just can't come up with enough information about the food bank to make this paper 5 pages.
Some things to include in the paper is how is it satisfying/challenging, explain what was learned about serving others, describe particular skills, attributes and knowledge that was useful in this experience.
Other questions how this experience connects with the course. If anyone could give me ideas I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Science and Mathematics over History and Literature

It is common thought that students who study science and mathematics can have wide ranges of opportunities and can be successful in the future. The richest men and woman in the world are those who have studied these subjects. I believe that studying science and mathematics is beyond more beneficial rather than studying history and literature. Students studying science and mathematics will improve their way of thinking, have more successful career choices, and use their teachings in everyday life.
To begin with, science and mathematics allows students in school to improve their ways of thinking and feed their brain with future needs. When learning history and literature students have to get lessons by heart, and while lectures are being taught students are writing everything down without understanding the material. As soon as the semester is over those lessons are most likely forgotten or “I do not need this for my future“ is said by the students. Science and mathematics are somewhat challenging subjects to learn. They require deep thinking in understanding material and solving complex problems. Under the circumstances students will be more reasonable in any situations presented to them in their future by learning these somewhat difficult subjects.
Another benefit for students to learn science and mathematics is that it gives students more options in their career choices. In fact, today the students motives towards studying is to get a good job with a high salary. A science and mathematics college degree will provide students with a great deal of choices for jobs such as medicine, computer science, engineering, and other professions. The majority of students don't understand why they should study history or literature without such purposes in their future. History and literature are mostly studied to feed our spirits and imaginations and we can live without that.

Funny I didn’t have rules like others. Neither did I hesitate reshaping my outfits to my taste nor risking a bit of wit and humor here and there. People always thought I was eccentric in many ways, but many approved. All this was the way of life and never did I think that this could be my career amongst all the stethoscopes and prescription pads. Dad is a well known doctor whose sense of honesty and credibility inspired me. So I followed him all the way, until I literally bumped into the artistic child in me, who had never grown up! Books of Valentino, life story & fashion metamorphosis by Chanel reaffirmed my theory of ‘no rules’. I overviewed the history and development of fashion through centuries, which all the more excited me of endless possibilities. I also learned that a lot of talented people in the industry haven’t been successful because ‘ART’ is a very personal dream and to sell it, one needs to understand the ‘art’ of the mass or the person you are catering to. The intricacy and idea behind couture creations are boundless and I’m very pleased that young artists like Rihaana/Drew Barrymore/ Sarah Jessica parker/katy perry/cate blanchet and many more are ‘risk takers’- an artist’s dream! Extravagance of Galliano, Macqueen, Mark Jacobs, Manish aurora thrills me. I also followed Victoria beckham’s recent fashion career and understood how creating and pursuing particular style gets you a ‘niche’ in the shelf. Thus I realized the importance of balancing one’s aesthetic urge with the body and minds of a client.
