To me, the grammar of the original is correct. I think it is our habit of focusing on a limited number of, even though most common, conditional structures that makes us deny the more "unusual" ones.
I think the uncontacted form works best, but there has to be an indication of stress for the sentence to work- without that, then it doesn't do it for me.![]()
