Hi Ayed! Welcome back.

Hi , usingenglish mates! How you doing? I hope you be in good condition.
I have been absent from you for being busy with some familial circumstances and works .As you do know , life is “ups and downs” for everyone.Anyway, I hope to be in contact with you, pals,as possible as I can.
Kindly, my questions be corrected :
Q-Which is correct? As I know that modifiers in English precede the modified element .However, I think there are some exceptions concerning this case.
I translted an Arabic text as :
--The pottery bowl was not burnt very well.
But, the archeaologist replaced it with :
--The pottery bowl was not very well-burnt.
Both of us are non-English native speakers?
Who is correct ?
Thank you in advance,
:)

Your example is a case of a predicate adjective after a linking verb. Your first sentence is an example of the passive voice, formed by [to be] + [past participle]. Some one or something burned the pottery bowl. It could be "The pottery bowl was not burnt very well by the potter." Your second example, IMO, changes that to a predicate adjective, using the participle to describe the pot.

That is the way I would put it if the burning was not considered a good thing, which is usually the case.
:)
That's a good point. I had assumed it was part of the process of creating the bowl. :wink:Originally Posted by RonBee

Wouldn't the bowl be 'fired' rather than 'burnt' if you're referring to the process of making it.![]()
