Hi,

I saw this sentence in my grammar book:

"There are advantages to stopping smoking."

I am wondering why the sentence is not like:

"There are advantages to stop smoking."

Why do we use "to stopping smoking" instead of "to stop smoking"

There are cases where we use 'to'+-ing, like 'look forward to seeing'. The reason is that 'to'is a preposition and not part ofan infinitive- 'to' goes with 'advantages'.

Other common ones include 'be acustomed to' 'be\get used to' 'object to' and any phrasal verb with two prepositions with 'to' at the end.
