| RATHER, PRETTY, FAIRLY or QUITE 1.I was _rather______ surprised to see him with his ex-wife. any 2.He was limping __pretty_____ badly. rather, pretty or quite 3.I got a letter from Sylvia __fairly______ recently. fairly or quite - not rather 4.The food in the cafeteria is usually _quite____ good. any 5.She still looks ___rather_____ miserable. any 6.I知 ____pretty____ sure he値l say yes. Quite sure means certain. Pretty or fairly, not rather. 7.The house had a _fairly_____ large garden. Rather, pretty, fairly but not quite. 8.She speaks English ________ well. Any. Pretty is more of a slang usage than the others. Rather often has an implication of surprise or doubt. If you say a garden (US yard) is rather large this implies that it's too big or larger than it should be. If the food is rather good it's better than you would expect. |
