[Grammar] "she did not tell him"

I suspect this to be incorrect.

(Please note I am generally writing in present tense and use the past only for backflashs.)

Why does this tell him she's concerned? Telling him that work gives him time to think is not particularly negative.

No! It happened only one time in the past. This is a flashback.
