Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right about my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

Tom is a great asset to the basketball team because he's got such long arms.

asset = advantage

The high character which the corps has won is in itself a valuable asset.

asset = resource

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V

In the first, he sounds like a resource too rather than an advantage. You could say that having long arms is an advantage (over people with short arms), but in this sentence, I can't see where the comparison is to have the advantage.
