I would say yes, and no.:-?

"Forget about it" always makes me think of freezeframe's link or any other mafia based movie.
or
It was a terrible trip. I just want to forget about it (but I think forget it is also commonly used in this type of situation).

Forget it ... can mean don't worry, or it's nothing ... depends on context and how it is said

A-I am so sorry I broke your vase.
B-Oh forget it, it was ugly anyway.
