Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

The policeman cautioned the motorist about his speed.

The judge gave the defendant a caution.

I cautioned him against being late.

caution = warn

Millions of islands dot the world's oceans.

The islands are dotted all round the coast.

dot = sprinkle

To dot the i's and cross the t's.

dot = punctuate; specify; define more accurately

All about were dotted leafy trees.

Boulders dotted (about /over/) the lunar landscape.

dot = stud, strew

I had a companion close by me, dotting down my conversation.

dot down = jot down = write briefly

You have to pay on the dot.

Susan arrived at the party at 2:00 P.M. on the dot.

Ben's plane arrived on the dot.

on the dot = exactly on time

She dotted me one in the eye.

dot = dab

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

To dot the i's and cross the t's. used idiomatically: To take care of every detail, even minor ones.
Before taking the project to the CEO, let's make sure we dot the i's and cross the t's.

dot = punctuate; specify; define more accurately; also to write correctly. Example: use of ‘the ellipsis’
It is used at the end of an unfinished sentence. The general rule is that you should always put a space before and after the ellipsis. 'Tom was.. and he played... ‘ This is not correct. It should be “Tom was … and he played … .”

Nice word 'dot'. However, you do not need to dot capital ‘I’ and cross capital ‘T’. I think, it should have been said “ dot your small Icross your small t’.
