The police had been looking for the suspect for two weeks. Ali was the suspect.

In joining the sentences, which of the following is the correct one?

Ali was the suspect for whom the police had been looking for two weeks.

Ali was the suspect whom the police had been looking for for two weeks.

Ali was the suspect whom the police had been looking for two weeks.

Thanks.

If he was the suspect, then "The police had been looking for Ali, the suspect, for two weeks" would do it.

The first two are fine. The third is a problem. As written it doesn't make sense. To perfect it, you'd have to add an additional for.

Ali was the suspect whom the police had been looking for for two weeks.

This might well be heard in speech, where vocal inflection could deal with it, but in writing it looks ridiculous.

Thanks, Barb.

I forgot to add that the sentences have to be joined using 'whom'. Sorry about that.

In that case, which is the correct sentence?

The police had been looking for the suspect for two weeks. Ali was the suspect.
