Slope aspect, closely related with the amount of incoming solar radiation, is an important factor that influences the spatial distribution of vegetation in mountainous areas (Tian 1996). Usually, vegetation shows quite different on shady and sunny slopes in mountain areas, especially in arid land (Armesto et al. 1978; Wilson et al. 2000; Gallardo-Cruz et al. 2009). The majority of previous studies focused mainly on the simple comparisons of shady and sunny slopes(Lin et al. 1985; Astrom et al. 2007; Chmura 2008; Gong et al. 2008), and four slope aspects (south, north, east and west) had been seldom involved(Armesto et al. 1978; Paulsenet al. 2001). The research on continuous variation of vegetation along aspect is even less to be found.
In recent years, there have been some attempts to study the continuous variation of vegetation along aspect, including the distribution of altitudinal belts in Mt. Elgon of East Africa and in Mt. Nanga Parbat of the northern Pakistan (Hamilton et al. 1981; Miehe 1994). Then, a software package(MABS-DIAS)has been developed for displaying the sequential distribution of altitudinal belts along the full aspect range(Sun et al. 2008). Based on a digitalized vegetation map, Pang studied the continuous variation of vegetation with aspect in the Kaghan Valley of northern Pakistan, by using GIS and RS technologies (Pang et al. 2012). However, the quantitative and continuous pattern of altitudinal belts with aspect has not been identified.
