| Just so that you know, it never is my intention to defile the forum with taboo words. I just read a newspaper column titled "Racial bigotry in aisle 66", and I was thinking what I would have done and said in the situation depicted in it. Imagining the situation, I tried saying the phrase, and discovered I couldn't say it as smoothly as I would've wanted. The problem is this: Racistscum - I can't make smooth transition there. The phrase should be something you would be able shout out in hurry, just like any other name callings. (Not that it's nice to do so) I'm currently at work and I can't record my pronounciation, but if you can give me suggestions I'd be much obliged. If this post survives I'll post my voice recording later for further opinions. Thank you. |

Final "t" sounds are often omitted. It happens. - spoken English. You'll have to slow down if you want to be sure you pronounce the "t" in this particular example. It's possible to say it fast, but you'll have to practice saying it slowly first. If someone were to say this loud and fast, the "t" sound would most likely not be heard. It depends. Each speaker is different. consonant sound + t st s - ft s - nt - isn't it? doesn't it? Last edited by Steven D; 17-Jun-2005 at 04:02. |

| I agree with X Mode- I'd say 'raciss-scum' in connected speech. Otherwise, it's difficult to say it fast. BTW, any genuine discussion on language is acceptable, so there's no problem here. |

I think that speakers oftentimes think they're pronouncing "t" sounds when they really aren't. It's in the mind. At times the tongue and the mouth might move where they're supposed to, but the sound is not actually produced. On the left side. |
