| Hi upstairs, I'd like to do so, can you please let me how to pronounce a word correctly if you don't know it at all (especially some names)? there is no phonetic symbol in your mind for this word, and my question is: can you figure out something from the spelling of the word for its pronunciation? Thank you! |

| Just to complicate matters even more, some names, especially family names, can have very strange pronunciations. For example, a name like Cholmondeley-Sidebottom is actually pronounced "CHUM-ly siddy-bitOME". The cult 1970s comedy show Monty Python's Flying Circus satirised this with a sketch involving a man whose name was spelled "Raymond Luxury-Yacht", but pronounced "Throatwobbler Mangrove". Some names come from other languages, such as Irish Gaelic. Irish Gaelic has very different pronunciation rules, and so for example Eithne is pronounced "Enya". |
