1. Not all hope is lost.
2. All hope is not lost.
3. Not all hopes are lost.
4. All hopes are not lost.

When we want to persuade someone not to lose hope, can all four above be used?

I'd use 1.

Or just say "Don't lose hope!"

Thanks a lot, Barb. Then the sentence underlined in the following is not good English, isn't it?


All hope was not lost.Soon after the quakes,the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to help the rescue workers.Hundreds of thousands of people were helped.The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead.

It's fine.

In fact, I prefer #2 to #1 - though #1 is also acceptable.
