Do is a main verb and also a verb,

"Do" is a main verb in a sentence like "Please do the dishes."

It is not in a sentence like "These sentences do correct."

You could say "Do these sentences correctly." You could say "Do correct these sentences."

But neither of those mean the same thing as your #1 sentence, "Are these sentence correct?"

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Good morning,

I know how you feel: it is confusing.

Many learners make the same mistake.

I believe that the main problem is: the verb "to be" is special. Learners forget this fact.

a. These sentences are correct.

i. To make the question, simply move "are" to the front:

"Are these sentences correct?"

*****

Please remember: "to be" is a special case. It is not treated like other verbs.

According to what I have read, many (many!) years ago, the English people made a question like this:

You eat apples. Eat you apples? (I believe that some languages still use this way to make questions.)

Then the English people (over the years, of course) decided to use "do," "does," or "did" for questions (and the negative).

People use those little words if the verb is not " to be."

*****

Oh! You say that "correct" is a verb. Yes, it is in "The teacher is going to correct the sentences." But in your sentence,

"correct" is an adjective. As you remember, an adjective describes somethiing:

Are these sentences correct, incorrect, interesting, good, offensive?

*****

If you are still confused, please continue to ask until someone is able to explain it in a way that you understand.

HAVE A NICE DAY!

A big thank you for your the best answer but could you possibly tell me if I can get in touch with you by [STRIKE]your[/STRIKE] email, because often I have some questions? Thank you so much.

We do not give out email addresses on this website. When you have made a certain number of posts you will be able to send and receive Private Messages on the forum, with people who have chosen to use the PM system.

Remember the rules of written English:

- Start every new sentence with a capital letter.
- End every sentence with the appropriate single punctuation mark.
- Do not put a space before a comma, full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Put a space after a comma, full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.

Death, please use correct written English. You really need to concentrate on your capitalisation and punctuation. As an English teacher, it is extremely important that you make correctly written posts.

I am a little surprised that somebody who can construct sentences like these should have problems with BE and auxiliary DO.

Do you know what your problem is? You want to translate a Persian sentence to English one,[space] and that's impossible. [space] Try to think in English and don't compare English to Persian[no space]. [space] When i was a student I had a similar problem. [space] You should watch more English films and listen to more English news.

death, I'm sure your advice is well intentioned, but when it's full of capitalization and spacing errors, you can end up confusing learners, who see "teacher" in your profile and may think that these things are not important. They ARE important. Please make sure your posts have proper capitalization and spacing in the future.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see the second page when I wrote this, but as you can see, emsr2d2 and I have the same strong feelings about this.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Hello, Prediction:

1. As Teacher Death suggested, the best way to learn this is to read / read / read and to listen / listen / listen.

I do not know whether it is true, but some famous people have claimed that they learned English by watching English-

language movies every day for a year.

2. Personally, I like rules. And I congratulate you on wanting to know the rules for making questions.

3. Here are some thoughts (not answers):

a. Study your books very hard and understand the verb "to be" completely.

b. I hope that you understand that questions (and the negative) come from affirmative sentences.

i. Affirmative: Your country is beautiful. Question: Is your country beautiful?

c. You want some examples. I have made some up:

i. Your sentences are right. Are your sentences right? ("Right" is another word for "correct." In other words, your sentences are not wrong.)

ii. Mona is a good student. Is Mona a good student?

iii. It was cold yesterday. Was it cold yesterday?

iv. It is raining now in Los Angeles. Is it raining now in L.A.?

v. The children will be hungry tomorrow. Will the children be hungry tomorrow?

d. I hope that you are getting the idea. IF the verb is "to be," NEVER use "do" to start a question.

e. Yes, you are correct: "do" sometimes is a verb. But when it starts a sentence, it is used only to make a question.

f. Once you really understand how to make questions (and the negative) with "to be," then you are ready to move on to

other verbs. Those other verbs use "Do," "Does," and "Did" for questions. Here are some examples:

i. You speak English. DO you speak English?
ii. Your country has beautiful cities. DOES your country have beautiful cities?
iii. Tony went to Paris last year. DID Tony go to Paris last year?

g. In one post, it is impossible to explain what it takes a book to do. I hope that these thoughts may be of some help. I shall now write a few affirmative sentences. Would you please change them to questions?

i. Tom is a good student. ____________________?
ii. Airplanes fly very fast. ____________________?
iii. Your sentences are beautiful. ______________?
iv. Martha sees a movie every week. __________?
v. It was raining yesterday. __________________?

Answers: Do airplanes fly very fast? / Are your sentences beautiful? / Does Martha see a movie every week? / Was it raining yesterday?

*****

If you have more questions, please ask. I think that it would be a good idea to start a new thread. Everyone here at usingenglish.com wants to help you. Please remember: You will learn it. It just takes time.

Sincerely yours,

James
