Hi, all!
- Jupiter spins faster than ................ planet.
A. any
B. any another
C. any others

D.

This is the way I look at it.

John studies harder than any other student - John is a student and I am comparing him to other students.

My husband is learning English by himself and he studies harder than any student (of mine) - John isn't a student and I am comparing his efforts to those of a different category of learners. Therefore I don't use "other".

Jupiter is a planet, which is being compared to other planets in the sentence above.

Hope it helps.

Please give your threads more helpful titles, hoangkha. 'I am wondering' tells us nothing.

Jupiter is a planet. It does not spin faster than itself. It spins faster than any other planet.

I am sorry. Yes, I get it. But it is a fait accompli and I don't know how to correct the title. It should have been " ANY + N and ANY OTHER + N."
And now, could you please tell me what is the difference between ANY + N and ANY OTHER + N ?

shannico did so in post #2, Jupiter is a planet, which is being compared to other planets, and SoothingDave in post #5, Jupiter is a planet. It does not spin faster than itself. It spins faster than any other planet.

As the sun is not a planet, we could say The sun spins faster than any planet.

1- ANY OTHER goes with plural countable N.
- Are there any other questions? (OALD)
- Are there any other people we should speak to? (Cambridge)

2- ANY goes with both singular countable N and plural countable N.

So I think if the exercise is like this.
- Jupiter spins faster than ................ planet.
A.
any
B. any another
C. any others

D.
any other
I wil choose A.

and if the exercise is like this

- Jupiter spins faster than ................ planets.
A.
any
B. any another
C. any others

D.
any other
I will choose D.

Isn't it right, please?

No. "Jupiter spins faster than any other planet" is correct.

If Carlos is a person (and I assume he is), then he can't be richer than himself. Which two can you eliminate?

#3 is correct, but only if he is the richest man in the world.
