Could you please help me to understand which option is correct and why?

He would better try harder, wouldn't he?
or
He had better try harder, hadn't he?

Q32 -
He'd better try harder, .......?

wouldn't he
hadn't he

This was question in test practicing creation of Question Tags. For answer I chose: "H'd better try harder, wouldn't he?" but test rejected this answer... I don't understand what is the rule here? My guess is that "H'd better try harder" = "He would better try harder, wouldn't he?" therefore answer was correct. Help???

Your guess is wrong. The 'd in He'd better try harder is short for He had better try harder not He would better try harder.

Click here to read more about 'had better'.

There is a phrase "had better." It means like "should."
It won't take time to look this up in a dictionary.
